The Little-Known Connection Between Hemp and Toilet Paper

HAPPY EARTH DAY!

At Humming Hemp we say that we are: Defined by Nature. Led by Heart. With today being the official Earth Day, we want to share with you what we mean when we say Humming Hemp is Defined by Nature.

Defined by Nature. It’s always Earth Day at Humming Hemp; Together with small and mid-size American hemp farmers we’re making the world greener, one industrial hemp plant at a time.

Did you know that the industrial hemp plant has an estimated 25,000 different uses? Because of this, it is hailed by many as a “wonder plant.” Some of the uses include: food (our personal favorite!!), making fibers, ropes, textiles, and paper, as a building material, extracting an oil with medicinal properties, and countless more. From the roots to the seeds, stem, oil, and leaves, every single part of the hemp plant can be used.

FUN FACT: The very first commercially marketed toilet paper in the US was made from hemp! “Gayetty’s Medicated Paper” made its appearance in 1857, and it was hemp paper!

Hemp is a hardy plant, it needs far less water than many other industrial crops such as cotton and soy. It also grows much faster than trees which are used to make paper. By replacing common products with hemp alternatives, many scientists believe we will be able to move towards a more sustainable mode of production and consumption.

One of the most amazing properties of the hemp plant, however, is its ability to pull huge quantities of carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere. While most plants can do this as part of photosynthesis (turning it into glucose and oxygen), hemp – with its large amounts of lush foliage – works even harder. Scientists estimate that for every ton of hemp grown, 1.63 tons of carbon dioxide are removed from the atmosphere. This is more than trees or other plants of a similar size.

These are just a few of the benefits of cultivating industrial hemp. These are benefits given to us by nature, and they define our ethos here at Humming Hemp. We didn’t create this wonder plant, but we have the honor to bring delicious and sustainable snacks from the industrial hemp plant to market.
